As The East Is From The West
Communal Borscht
Wednesday, October 15, 2008
I am fortunate to live with a few people who not only can cook but don’t mind doing so in our cramped kitchen. Today, a couple of girls made a big pot of borscht and shared it with everyone who came into the kitchen. It was delicious and afterwards we sat around and two people who play guitar sang some Russian songs. It’s really exciting that my guitar is already getting use.
The above picture makes the kitchen look a bit bigger than it is. The people sitting on the right have their chairs all the way against the counter and this is taken from the doorway. If someone wanted to get to the fridge, they would have to crawl over the people on the right or step on their toes or have them stand up.
Also, the storage visible in the background is the shelf Judith and I salvaged. I guess the administrators didn’t like how we had it propped on the fridges, so they mounted it for us. We thought we were being a little subversive stealing it from a pile of garbage, so it’s odd that they reacted so favorably.
